Sancta Susanna: A Horror Opera
October 24 & 25, 2024 | 7:30PM
The Church at Heritage Square Museum

Just in time for Halloween, Source/Filter proudly presents the West Coast Premiere of Paul Hindemith’s daring and rarely-performed opera, Sancta Susanna! This boundary-pushing horror opera will feature a new English libretto by Britta Sterling and Rae Shrum with a fully-immersive staging at Heritage Square Museum’s historic Lincoln Avenue Church.

Sancta Susanna transports audiences to a secluded convent where an innocent nun, Susanna, grapples with disturbing satanic visions. As she seeks solace from her mother superior, she uncovers a dark and sinister secret hidden within the convent's walls. Inspired by cult horror classics like Dario Argento’s Suspiria and Ken Russell’s The Devils, this production aims to deliver a spine-chilling performance that questions whether the nun will fall victim to her inner demons.

The evening will also feature a chilling choral program of atmospheric pieces for chamber treble voices performed by our talented chorus of evil nuns. The repertoire will include haunting works by composers Benjamin Britten, Nadia Boulanger, Hildegard von Bingen, and more.

Stick around after the performance for a demonic dance party featuring a live DJ playing everyone's favorite macabre hits! Costumes are strongly encouraged for this event. Tickets on sale now for just $15-50!
